About the Talk‍

Dr. Alicia St. Leger and Glen Barry will give a joint talk about the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, County Cork. The Sirius Arts Centre occupies the former clubhouse of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, founded in 1720, the oldest yacht club in the world. Alicia St. Leger will provide an historical overview of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, including the background to the creation of the clubhouse itself. Glen Barry will talk about the Sirius Arts Centre, the current owner of the building, and discuss the plans underway to repair, restore and secure this historic building for the future.

About the Speakers‍

Dr. Alicia St. Leger is a graduate of University College Cork, Ireland (B.A. in History and Geography, M.A. in History) and the University of Saskatchewan in Canada (Ph.D in Modern History). She works as a freelance historian based in Cork and is involved in publications, museums and exhibition projects all over Ireland. Her publications include A History of the Royal Cork Yacht Club (2005) and a short Supplement to 'A History of the Royal Cork Yacht Club': An updated sequence for the years 1720-1833, due for publication in 2023.

Glen Barry is a practicing architect and a registered member of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland and the Royal Institute of British Architects. With over fifteen years working as Design Principal at Wilson Architecture, Ireland & Asia, Glen developed a regional, national, and international portfolio of scaled urban projects. Glen is now the Managing Director and founding member of SHiPSEYBARRY, an architectural practice specializing in masterplanning, urban design and architecture in the commercial development sector in Ireland.
